PRINCE HARRY PRAISES HALO AT BRITISH AMBASSADOR DINNER IN WASHINGTON DC

On 9 May 2013 Prince Harry, Patron of HALO’s 25th Anniversary Appeal, greeted more than 200 guests at a reception held at the residence of British Ambassador, Sir Peter Westmacott. Following the reception, he joined the Ambassador and Lady Westmacott, Senator McCain, Senator Leahy, Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Secretary of State John Kerry, and HALO donors for an intimate dinner party.   The Prince later made a speech which recalled the passion his mother, Princess Diana, had for landmine clearance and paid tribute to HALO donors, including the US Government, the largest donor to humanitarian mine action worldwide. “This evening gives me great personal pleasure too,” the Prince said. “My mother, who believed passionately in this cause, would be proud of my association with HALO. In her special way, she adopted it as her own. She would join me – along with all of you, I’m sure – in praising HALO for the amazing work that it has done over the past quarter century, and in hoping that one day soon its humanitarian work will be done".

RACING TO CLEAR LANDMINES

The HALO Trust had two runners Race to Clear Landmines in Washington, DC’s Marine Corps Marathon last weekend - 28 October, 2012.

Runner Kurt Chesko is the former Vice-President of HALO USA.  On Sunday, Kurt ran his first marathon in support of the charity that he’d worked for nearly 10 years.  Kurt, currently a Masters Candidate at New York University, joined HALO in 2002.  He did his mineclearance training in Afghanistan and worked in Somalia, Sudan, Abkhazia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Mozambique, before being promoted to run US operations.  Kurt’s marathon training took him through the streets of New York City, his current hometown, too many times to count.  It was worth it.  Kurt finished his first marathon in 4:10:44, while raising a fantastic $2,670 to clear landmines.

The second runner is also no stranger to HALO’s work.  Jay Kimmel witnessed HALO’s mineclearance firsthand while living in Angola with the U.S. State Department.  He finished with a personal record in his fifth and fastest marathon - 4:04:09.  Jay encouraged his friends and family to give to HALO, a charity and mission he feels passionate about, by personally matching their donations.  In Jay’s words, “Even without this focal event--running the Marine Corps Marathon--I would encourage anyone serious about charity to support The HALO Trust…The staff of The HALO Trust are serious professionals, many working under extreme conditions, truly demonstrating the heroism that donors often expect from charity groups.”

This is the second year HALO has been an official charity partner of the Marine Corps Marathon, as well as the San Francisco Marathon.  27 runners have raised $20,876 in support of the HALO’s mission, “getting mines out of the ground, now”.

If you are interested in running a marathon for HALO please contact us at mail@halousa.org or +1-415-986-4852.

ART EXHIBITION AT THE OLD ROYAL SHIP LUCKINGTON, WILTSHIRE

Veronica Hargreaves very kindly organised “A Family Exhibition” at Luckington in May to raise awareness and funds for the HALO Trust.  The artists exhibiting were all relations: John Thorneycroft, and his son, Richard Thorneycroft, sister Victoria Nathanson and her daughter Susannah, Veronica Hargreaves and Fiona Willoughby.

We had a very successful opening night with around 200 people from all over the South West supporting the HALO Zimbabwe programme and buying many paintings  - with a percentage donated to HALO.

The exhibition ran for 4 days and attracted a lot of local interest including the schools who came in for a few hours to hear about HALO’s work across the world from Chief Executive, Guy Willoughby.

Many thanks to Veronica and all the team at Luckington for putting on such a wonderful event.
