HALO clears its first landmine in Colombia

A day after starting mine clearance operations in Colombia HALO has cleared its first mine. Deminer Jorge Daza who safely located the mine works as part of a team funded by the US Government (PM/WRA).

This team was clearing El Morro minefield which sits 500 metres from the community of Puerto Venus which has just over 1,000 inhabitants.

Whilst locating and destroying a landmine is not unusual, this marks a milestone in Colombia’s mine action sector as the first mine cleared by a civilian team and validates HALO’s minefield survey.

Jorge joined HALO in May 2013 coming from San Raphael in Antioquia. Prior to joining HALO he was a farm labourer after being displaced by the conflict. He now has regular employment with chances of further advancement.
