Celebrating Angola's leadership in landmine clearance
In brief
HALO and the United Nations came together to celebrate Angola's leadership and significant progress in landmine clearance, creating safer communities.
Thank you for joining The HALO Trust in New York for the recent event alongside the UN General Assembly, where we came together to celebrate Angola’s leadership in landmine clearance.
The event showcased Angola’s historic investment in demining, which has saved countless lives and revitalized vital ecosystems like the headwaters of the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We were honored to have His Excellency, President João Lourenço, with us, whose visionary leadership continues to ensure a safer and more prosperous future for Angola's people and wildlife.
We also honored the powerful legacy of Diana, Princess of Wales, whose groundbreaking visit to Angola in 1997 brought global attention to the landmine crisis. Her son, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, has proudly carried forward her mission, helping to shine a light on the continued importance of landmine clearance.
With nearly 1,600 local staff, HALO has cleared more than 118,000 landmines from over 1,000 minefields in Angola. We thank you for your support and for standing with Angola and HALO in this critical mission towards a mine-free future.
