17th September 2019 | Angola | Clearing explosives

We are delighted to announce that His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, will visit The HALO Trust's programme in Angola on September 26 and 27 as part of his African Tour.

A key moment in the trip will see The Duke mark the historic visit of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, to Angola’s second city Huambo in 1997. It was on the visit to Huambo that she drew worldwide attention to the humanitarian crisis caused by landmines.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

>> The Duke will stay overnight in a tented camp next to a HALO minefield in southeastern Angola.

>> The minefield is at the meeting point of the two Angolan rivers that feed the World Heritage Site of the Okavango Delta.

>> Walking in his mother's footsteps, The Duke will visit the place where Princess Diana donned a HALO protective vest and destroyed a mine. The area is now a bustling community of homes, shops and schools.

>> He will visit a rehabilitation facility in Huambo that treats landmine victims, which is to be named in honour of his late mother.

The Mine Ban Treaty

Princess Diana stands in front of a Danger Mines sign in a minefield in Angola
"The mine is a stealthy killer. Long after conflict is ended, its innocent victims die or are wounded in countries of which we hear little. Their lonely fate is never reported."
Princess Diana

Countless thousands of lives have been saved by the 1997 global landmine ban that followed the Princess' visit to Angola. The Duke has continued his mother's legacy, in 2011 he visited our programme in Mozambique and in 2013 he traveled to Cuito Cuanavale in Angola on a private trip. On International Mine Awareness Day in 2017, The Duke launched the campaign for a Landmine Free 2025 at a reception at Kensington Palace, London.
