Partnership with Trafigura Foundation supports HALO's work in Angola

The new three-year partnership will enable resilient livelihoods and conservation
13th January 2026 | Angola | News | Clearing explosives, Protecting the environment, Partners

The HALO Trust is delighted to announce a new three-year partnership with the Trafigura Foundation to clear minefields in Angola.

With support from the Foundation, HALO will clear 396,000 sq metres (39.6 hectares) of hazardous land in Bié Province and in the national parks of the Okavango River Basin, one of the world's most important wilderness areas.

As well as eliminating deadly threats to both communities and wildlife, the project will open up access to productive land for 8,920 people. This will enable communities to build sustainable, resilient livelihoods in the face of environmental degradation, while also strengthening vital conservation efforts in the Okavango River's headwaters in southern Angola.

Find out more about the Trafigura Foundation.

"We are excited that this partnership with the Trafigura Foundation will strengthen the links between mine action, climate adaptation and environmental protection, protecting some of Angola's most vulnerable communities and ecosystems. Together, we will transform land scarred by conflict into thriving communities."

James Cowan, CEO of The HALO Trust

HALO has been working in Angola since 1994. In that time, it has cleared land equivalent to more than 6,000 football pitches, now used for growing crops and critical infrastructure such as schools, roads and hospitals.

Yet despite considerable progress, the persistent presence of landmines continues to threaten lives, exacerbate poverty, and hinder sustainable development and environmental protection. Restoring access to land is fundamental to empowering rural communities living with the decades-long legacy of conflict, compounded by growing climate pressures.

By making more areas safe, HALO and the Trafigura Foundation will help unlock sustainable livelihoods, protect Angola's rich biodiversity, and foster ecotourism in the country's national parks – building a more resilient future for both people and nature.
