In brief

James Cowan, CEO of The HALO Trust, welcomes the appointment of Kirsty McNeill MP as UK Minister for Development and Africa.

James Cowan, CEO of The HALO Trust, said:

"Congratulations to Kirsty McNeill on her appointment as Minister for Development and Africa.

At a time of growing conflict and instability around the world, the UK has an important role to play in supporting communities affected by war and helping countries recover from conflict. From Ukraine to Angola, from Syria to Somaliland, landmines and explosive remnants of war continue to threaten lives, prevent displaced families from returning home, and hinder economic recovery and development.

The UK has long been a global leader in humanitarian mine action and post-conflict recovery. As Minister for Development, Kirsty McNeill has an opportunity to champion the vital role that UK development and humanitarian assistance plays in protecting civilians, supporting stability, and creating the conditions for sustainable economic growth. Investment in mine clearance, weapons and ammunition management, and broader recovery efforts not only saves lives but enables communities to rebuild, children to return to school, farmers to cultivate their land, and businesses to thrive.

We look forward to working closely with the Minister, alongside the Foreign Secretary and colleagues across government, to ensure that people living in conflict-affected and fragile states are not left behind. By supporting efforts to address the long-term impacts of conflict, the government can help build safer, more resilient communities and reinforce the UK's reputation as a force for good on the global stage.

We look forward to engaging with the Minister and her team to advance our shared goal of a safer world, free from the impact of landmines and the dangers left behind by conflict."
